Windows 7 and Microsoft Word allow you to insert symbols above letters without using ribbon commands. For example, work with a Windows PC keyboard to apply keyboard combinations that insert accented marks. Holding the 'Ctrl' key plus a punctuation key and the letter will insert the marked letter on your document. Diacritics include the acute, grave and circumflex accents. These keyboard shortcuts will help you display text more accurately in your business documents. Related Articles

You’ve probably been wondering how to get accented letters into your words when preparing documents using word processors like Microsoft Word. How do you get to include them? As it turns out, the Windows 10 operating system and Microsoft Office Word 2010 or later already have inbuilt capabilities to insert accent symbols in documents that you prepare in them. Accent symbols are pretty important. They allow you to clarify the meaning of a word to a user, whether it is the Spanish n or the French e. Consider the word “resume”, for example it can either mean to go back to work or some activity that you had been undertaking before. When written as “résumé”, it refers to the summary you write up and send to a potential employer of your prior work experience. Accent Music DefinitionLetter A With Down Accent Above ItNote, however, that the accents you put over letters aren’t the same as the ones you use in music. The accent music definition is slightly different from the accent word definition in that, in music, the accents are placed over music symbols. They do, however, serve the same overall purpose, in that they tell the music player how to articulate certain musical phrases. Microsoft Word already has a command Ribbon that includes symbols that you can add to your words. These symbols include the most common accented letters found in various words. However, the process is fairly slow. There are shortcuts on the keyboard which you can use to insert symbols like the circumflex, grave or acute accents. There is also another method you can use on Windows 7 that involves combining the Alt key and numeric code keys to insert accented letters. Open WordIn order to perform the shortcuts, you will have to have a document open. The first step, therefore, is to open the Microsoft Word application on your computer. Locate DocumentOnce inside Microsoft Word, go to the File button and click on it. There you will see a drop-down menu with a number of options. Click on the “Open” option. You will be taken to a mini file explorer where you can select the file to open. Locate and open the document you would like to insert the accent in. Ctrl and PunctuationOnce the document is open, press the Ctrl key on your keyboard and a punctuation key at the same time. The punctuation keys you can press include the following: the tilde, colon, caret, apostrophe, and grave symbols. All of these are accents that can be placed above letters. For example, if you press the Ctrl key and the grave key at the same time, you will create a grave accent symbol. If you combine the Ctrl key and the caret key, you will insert the circumflex symbol. Each of the punctuation keys mentioned above caters to a specific accent. Press LetterNow press the letter you intend to accent. The accented version of the letter appears.
